The Sugar House Lifestyle: Quiet, quirky and in demand

In Blog, Neighborhoods by Via Maria

Described as a “quiet and cheerfully quirky suburb,” by This Old House in its listing of “Best Old House Neighborhoods,” Sugar House has been named one of the “Best Places to Live and Work” by Sunset magazine…twice!

Why has this relaxed neighborhood, tucked between downtown Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Mountains, gained national attention? Why would young professionals come to me asking specifically for a home in Sugar House? I believe the answer lies in the combination of the architecture, locally owned businesses, and people who call this “hood” home. In an age of impersonal master-planned communities, a neighborhood with this much character and history is rare earth.

Sugar House is known for easy accessibility to amenities such as specialty markets, coffee shops, brewpubs, and yoga studios. All are a short walk or bike ride away. Especially popular is 9th and 9th district located at the intersection of 900 E and 900 S. where you’ll find everything from the historic Tower theater, to sidewalk cafes haunted by students and entrepreneurs. And feel free to bring Fido – most businesses are pet friendly.

In this neighborhood, you’re buying more than a home; you’re investing in a lifestyle. Located only 10 minutes from downtown and five minutes from the extensive Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the quality of life in Sugar House is one of its best features.

Homes sell lightning fast in a neighborhood this popular. Thanks to years of excellent relationships with other agents, I often get early notice of listings when hours count. My track record of finding homes for buyers in this market is one of the reasons buyers return home after home.

Sugar House homes are a diverse mix of cottage, Tudor, and Victorian styled homes. Most were built between the early 1900s and 1950s, which means buying a home in Sugar House here has some special considerations.

After selling homes in this area for over 20 years, I see things other people might miss. Most of the homes here have little “character” as I like to call it. It takes an experienced eye to separate the quirks from the deal killers. While most of the homes here have been well cared for, or even updated, sometimes I talk clients OUT of buying when a home isn’t a good investment.

Once you find a potentially perfect home, always hire a solid team of inspectors before buying. Again, you want to work with professionals who know this area well.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve sold in excess of a hundred homes in Sugar House, and for each of those, I toured many others. This means I’m intimately familiar with the homes here, including their qualities, quirks, and values. I provide buyers with expertise and depth of knowledge that can only be gained through decades of experience. From the first showing, to closing on your new home, I’ll be by your side. This is why over 80% of my business is from repeat clients or referrals from happy clients.
